As some of you know, ive got a Saxo VTR. My mate has kindly offered to cut out my middle box and cat, and weld another pipe in place. Is this a good idea or not? ill still have on the Standard back box for the time being.
Cheers

it will fail MOT with no cat! So you will need some way of putting the cat back on at MOT time! And your insurance will be void if you drive with no cat!

just the cat i think ( someone correct me if i am wrong) as when you remove the cat the car is classed as not road worthy!

Removing the cat does NOT make your car not roadworthy, how do you think decatted cars get by? It will however void your insurance on the grounds of the vehicle being modified, even more so if its not declared, just leave it as is, get a full system instead of doing a bodge job.

I'm with Damien although i have modded my cat before. Basically you cut apart the standard cat and take the guts out. From an insurance point it looks stock but noise and power wise theres an increase. However, if a sports cat or de-cat can be got cheap enough then do it properly. I only emptied my cat cause my original conrods decided to try and exit thru the block and exhaust so the inside got smashed.
I've now got another car with stock manifolds and downpipes, de-cat, stock middle section and Rage stainless back box. Sounds mental in the car, like a TVR.

It also decreases back pressure meaning loss of torque and bottom end power, not much, but enough to make a difference:)

Invalidates your insurance? Only if you're stupid enough not to tell them.
Its completely legal to drive without a cat' as long as it would pass the MOT emmissions test without it.
As has been said though, you will loose a little bit of back pressure and therefore a bit of low down torque. Personally I'd get a full system as has been mentioned, with a sports cat.
